Commonly Asked Questions
What is Formula SAE?
|
The yearly Formula SAE competition is THE event that we design our race car for. The competition is once a year, and every year a new car must be designed. Additionally, each year we choose the location we'd like to attend. It's always a new adventure, and that's what Formula Hardrocker Racing enjoys the most.
Formula SAE, a competition developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers, is an arena for the elite Universities and Technological institutions that lead the world in preparation of various engineers.
To be competitive with these teams, it is absolutely essential to have a morally strong team, intricate understanding of all the components, and fundamental practice of design and engineering.
The vehicle for this competition is a 4 wheeled, motorcycle engine powered, open wheeled, and open cockpit formula style racecar. Overall it must be light, fast, well designed, and must be able to navigate a parking lot style autocross course. The competition itself includes 7 events. Rules can be seen

"The Formula SAE competition is for SAE student members to conceive, design, fabricate, and compete with small formula-style racing cars. The restrictions on the car frame and engine are limited so that the knowledge, creativity, and

imagination of the students are challenged. The cars are built with a team effort over a period of about one year and are taken to the annual competition for judging and comparison with approximately 120 other vehicles from colleges and universities throughout the world. The end result is a great experience for young engineers in a meaningful engineering project as well as the opportunity of working in a dedicated team effort. For the purpose of this competition, the students are to assume that a manufacturing firm has engaged them to produce a prototype car for evaluation as a production item. The intended sales market is the nonprofessional weekend autocross racer. Therefore, the car must have very high performance in terms of its acceleration, braking, and handling qualities. The car must be low in cost, easy to maintain, and reliable. In addition, the car's marketability is enhanced by other factors such as aesthetics, comfort and use of common parts. The manufacturing firm is planning to produce four (4) cars per day for a limited production run and the prototype vehicle should actually cost below $25,000. The challenge to the design team is to design and fabricate a prototype car that best meets these goals and intents. Each design will be compared and judged with other competing designs to determine the best overall car." Design, pg 2.

Could I use this for senior design?
Simple Answer: MOST DEFINITELY!Detailed Answer: Sure can. However, it is HIGHLY reccommended that you spend at least a year on the team before you join to become a senior design member. Why, you ask? The TEAM is what makes Formula Hardrocker Racing what it is, and having long-time members makes the team VERY close-knit. A close-knit team leads to victory and excellence in engineering! So, help make that possible, and join Formula Hardrocker Racing today, BEFORE you start senior design. We promise, you will not regret it.
As an underclassman, how can I get involved?
Formula Future is a sub-team started specifically for underclassman. Click Here to see what projects underclassman have done in the past. These are only examples of the endless possibilities available to underclassman. If you come to the senior group with an idea, if you have done the work and research, they WILL support you. Last, but not least, underclassman can always help the seniors in building the current year's car. So, join today, and start building the Formula Hardrocker Racing car tomorrow.
So, I get to build a car, what else do I do?
First, you get to spend time with your team. Formula Hardrocker Racing is constantly planning fun team events to keep us young, and having fun - together. Also, if you are one of the hardworking team members, you are allowed an opportunity to come to competition in the summer - a definite plus. Lastly, we have team t-shirts, hats and other apparel that you can get to help support the team around campus. Not to mention, our apparel looks awesome! In addition, we just developed some posters that we'll be selling to raise money for the team - check those out.
