2008-09 Formula Future Setup Table Project

Every year the SDSMT Formula Team gives the freshman and sophomores of the team the opportunity to design and build a project that will benefit the team and encourage underclassman involvement. The team had so many eager freshman and sophomores this year that we decided to split into two groups. This group decided to tackle a project that has been in the team's sights for many years; a suspension setup table. The idea was to create a platform that will allow the team to perform quick and accurate adjustments and suspension tuning even while on the road

The Formula Future team took feedback from older members and then set to work creating the perfect platform for FSAE car alignments. During the design process we presented PDR (preliminary design review) and CDR (critical design review) presentations to the team and advisors. This allowed us to gain valuable feedback from other people on the team.
We wanted the table to be completely adjustable, allowing past, present and future FSAE cars to use this tool. Using extruded aluminum t-slot material we created a design that was easily adjusted in both width and length.

Inside the table, adjustable scale cradles hold the electronic scales and turn-tables. The table, with a built in monometer leveling system, could be leveled using adjustable feet so that any parking lot could become a precise alignment center.

This project was a great success. Not only did we successfully complete the setup table, but perhaps more important was the team building and friendships created. The individuals listed above all became active members in the FSAE team and good friends, learning from each other and working together to solve problems. This was an excellent project that gave us all valuable engineering and manufacturing experience that will surely be put to use in our future FSAE projects and even our careers after graduation.
