2008-2009 Formula Future
Shifter Project After brainstorming and several decision matrices, we ultimately decided on a microcontroller controlled system that operates two electric linear actuators with potentiometer feedback. How does our system work? In essence, the actuators simulate the clutching and shifting actions the driver would normally do. When the driver pushes a button,
the microcontroller begins the process of shifting. Simply stated, the
microcontroller monitors the positions of both actuators, and four relays are
systematically switched on and off. Although difficult, this project has been an
excellent learning experience, and final programming is in progress and the
light at the end of the tunnel is visible! Hopefully the team’s investment in
this freshman executed project will help our common goal, “To be the fastest car
at competition!”
